15 LISOF BCom Degree in Fashion Bursaries on offer!

posted on May 10th, 2016 by LISOF

Lisof, Africa’s most progressive fashion design school and retail education institution, is thrilled to announce its newly accredited

BCom Fashion Degree.

As the pioneer in fashion education, Lisof will start its new Bcom Fashion Degree in January 2017. This addition to Lisof’s course offerings is truly unique in the fashion education landscape, as it recognises that the market for employment in the fashion industry has shifted towards contextualised business disciplines, such as fashion retail.

“With its balanced focus on the science, art and business of fashion, this programme seeks to address major skills gaps within our enormous fashion retail industry, and by honouring the reality that fashion is about so much more than just trends, style and design,” says Shana Rosenthal, CEO and founder of Lisof.

Fashion is a serious business, and as recently reported by the online publication, Business of Fashion, globally, fashion is a $1.5 trillion dollar industry that employs millions and impacts the daily lives of billions.

“Our new BCom Fashion Degree will allow us to explore collaborative opportunities between fashion education and the business of fashion. It is our responsibility as educators and experts to supply the industry with exceptional and extraordinary talent,” adds Rosenthal.

Three fashion retail industry experts, Devon Retief from the Foschini Group, Stuart Marsh from Polo and Lisof Alumni and fashion entrepreneur, Tiaan Nagel, all echoed each other in saying that a BCom Fashion Degree is long overdue for the industry and that they welcome Lisof’s decision to pioneer this course.

The mixture and combination of courses utilised in Lisof’s BCom in Fashion illustrates a balance that serves to develop an understanding of the art and discipline of both fashion design and manufacture. This approach is built around developing students into the mould of a multi-disciplined manager within the retail environment or a specialist planner, merchandiser or buyer.

This BCom Degree aims to deliver the following outcomes:

  • An in-depth understanding of the business of fashion
  • Adaptability to all areas of the fashion retail market
  • A strong base in business and commerce
  • Competent critical and analytical thinkers
  • Competency in data correlation tools, e.g. Excel
  • Being abreast with important retailing trends

  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • Merchandise Planning & Buying Management
  • Textiles and Fashion
  • Fashion Practice
  • Experiential

“This BCom Fashion Degree will require a strong numerate student and will have the same entry requirements for BCom Degrees in other tertiary institutions. It is indeed a wonderful opportunity for prospective students to join highly successful alumni who have made waves not only locally, but also in the international world of fashion,” says Rosenthal.

Lisof is a private tertiary institution fully accredited by the South African Council of Higher Education and, by being the first college to launch BA and BCom degrees in fashion in the South Africa, a pioneer in fashion education.

Upcycling Fashion

posted on February 3rd, 2016 by LISOF

On Friday 29 January, Lisof, revived the outdated and discarded into contemporary style statements. First year Johannesburg and Pretoria students registered at this prestigious school were given the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and flair for fashion at an introductory fashion show of designs made from recyclable materials. Miss Earth South Africa, Carla Viktor joined in support of recycling materials that would normally land up in a landfill.

“We wanted to kick-start the year by challenging our new students with a fashion design brief that offered them the platform to make garments by using materials supplied and materials found at home. This was all done in the new-age style spirit of upcycling,” says Shana Rosenthal, CEO of Lisof.

The greater inspiration behind the idea was to also get the students to interact with each other, make friends, and become familiar with the Lisof campus and the Lisof ethos.

The catwalk setting was none other than the Lisof campus grounds and students were paired up, with one of them sporting the designs.

The Brief: The outfit had to be upcycled, had to be finished well and above all had to stand out. This allowed the first-years to be as creative as possible and to showcase their long-term decision of turning style into a lifestyle.

There were 3 prizes awarded:

  • Best Overall Contemporary Design
  • Most Commercial Potential
  • Best Menswear

The students chosen to participate were registered for either a Bachelors of Arts, a Diploma or a Higher Certificate in Design, Retail and Media.

“The ultimate motivation behind this introductory fashion show was to encourage group work, and to get these fashion aspirants into the Lisof mindset of creativity and problem solving. As importantly, it was also our aim to create a stage that showcases originality and nurture fresh talent from the start,” says Rosenthal.

The judges were:

alan and krishen

At Blairgowrie, Johannesburg Capus – Fashion duo, Alan Foley and Krishen Samuel of Alanandkrishan.com

judges pta

and at Hatfield, Pretoria Campus – Vanya and Thando of Sungoddess, Wayne Stafford (SA Bachelor 2015 and Events and Production organiser) and Carike Nel (freelance designer).

“The only real winner is to be found in the objective behind this fashion show. Today there is a need for people in the fashion industry to be aware of our negative contribution to the pollution of our planet. For that reason, Lisof is trying to introduce the idea of sustainability to the new generation of Lisofians. This fashion show represents but a small part of our endeavours to do exactly that. Yes, it was our aim to warmly welcome our first year students; yet it was also our aim to set the trend of what they can expect in the next few years to come – the goal of self-sustainable, responsible and revolutionary style trends,” said Rosenthal.

Prospective students who are keen to explore a career in fashion or retail can contact Lisof for career guidance or register now for mid-year intake of 2016 Higher Certificate or Short Courses. Next BA Degree, Diploma and the BCOM in Fashion is open now for 2017 intake.
