DIY Face Mask Tutorial

During this global pandemic, you might feel anxious and helpless, but in fact – fashion design students can use their sewing skills to help themselves, family and friends. Watch this quick clip of the importance of wearing a face mask during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Caileigh-Jayne Davis is a LISOF Alumna and lecturer. She created 2 face mask patterns. Choose which one you think is best and get started. Most fashion students have scrap fabric and these masks are small enough to use a minimal amount from your fabric stash. Easy fully explained instructions below along with downloadable pattern. What you’ll need for Panel Face Mask No. 1

  • Cotton Fabric
  • Fusing
  • 6mm Elastic
  • Pattern (Download Below)
  • Thread in matching colour to the Fabric
  • Fabric Scissor
  • Sewing Machine
  • Overlocker [OPTIONAL]

Instructions:

STEP 1 – CUT THE FABRIC.

FABRIC – Cut along the pattern, it already has Seam Allowance added.

The easiest way to cut this is to have the fabric cut on fold, to get the perfect mirror imaged pieces. Cut one layer β€˜outer’ and one layer β€˜lining’.

FUSING – Cut along the pattern, it already has Seam Allowance added.

STEP 2 – FUSE THE LINING PIECES.

On the Wrong Side of the Lining pieces press the Fusing Glue side down.

STEP 3 – STITCH THE CURVE.

Put the Right-Hand Side of the Outer and Lining Together, then stitch along the curve with a 1cm Seam Allowance. Clip

STEP 4 – CLIP THE CURVE.

STEP 5 – PRESS.

Press seams to one side

STEP 6 – STITCH THE TOP AND BOTTOM.

Put the Lining and Outer together Right-Hand sides together, stitch closed with a Foot stitch [7mm]. Do not sew the sides closed.

STEP 7 – BAG OUT.

Turn the DIY mask to the Right side through the side piece. Press.

STEP 8 – FINISH ENDS.

Finish the raw edges with an Overlocker or a Zig Zag stitch.

STEP 9 – ADD ELASTIC TO FINISH.

Add elastic to the corner, secure the elastic on at 7mm. Turn the edge over and edge stitch to finish.

  • Cotton Fabric
  • 6mm Elastic
  • Thread in matching colour to the Fabric
  • Pattern (Download below)
  • Fabric Scissor
  • Sewing Machine
  • Overlocker [OPTIONAL]

Instructions:

STEP 1 – CUT A SQAURE [OFF THE PATTERN].

Make sure to notch the Fabric.

STEP 2- HEM THE TOP AND BOTTOM.

On the Wrong side of the Fabric, press over the raw edge of 1cm, and then another 1cm, creating a FOLD ON FOLD HEM. Stitch the hem with an EDGE stitch.

STEP 3 – PLEATING

Fold 3 pleats into the fabric through using the Notches from the Pattern.

Stay stitch the pleats down the sides with a Foot stitch [7mm] to hold them in place.

STEP 4 – FINISH ENDS.

Finish the raw edges with an Overlocker or a Zig Zag stitch.

STEP 5 – ADD ELASTIC TO FINISH.

Add elastic to the corner, secure the elastic on at 7mm. Turn the edge over and edge stitch to finish.
