Drew Henry – Making waves across the Pond
They say you can take the boy out of Africa, but you can’t take Africa out of the boy. Drew Henry, whom graduated from LISOF in 2007, recently graduated from the acclaimed Central Saint Martins in London. Drew elected to further his fashion studies with a Fashion and Marketing degree after completing his studies at LISOF, enrolling at St. Martins in 2009.
Henry’s graduate collection was, from the start, an ode to his African roots. The the catalyst and main inspiration for his collection came in discovering the works of South African artists David Goldblatt, Jurgen Schadeberg and Roger Ballen, whose works centers around South Africa’s working class.
The collection, Intersections, further references African tribal heritage, with coats and dresses in geometrically cut, autumn toned animal skins. Although the garments are incredibly crafted, the silhouettes are kept sleek and modern – a “complete wardrobe” for the refined professional woman with the luxury market in mind. As Drew explains, it’s his aim to create “really beautiful and carefully considered clothes”.
The future certainly looks bright for Drew Henry who has been hailed “the best in his class” by the Business of Fashion and has been accepted to CSM’s MA Fashion program under the tutelage of the esteemed and revered Louise Wilson.
We at LISOF are certainly very proud of our own and can’t wait to see what’s next for this South African making waves across the pond.
